WAC Nites

About this programme

WAC Nites begins again on Tuesday 18th of September 2012.

WAC Nites runs on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, with sessions running between 5.00 – 8.30 pm. We offer a wide range of activities and training, including DJ-ing and mixing, drumming and trampolining. Our music nights and young bands night sessions provide access to rehearsal and state of the art recording facilities to help young bands progress their work.

The aim of this programme is to encourage young people to develop their independent skills. As well as experiencing the opportunity of working with and alongside professional artists, we hope they will enjoy each other’s company and have fun.

WAC Nites has also increased its support for young people with learning difficulties to socialise with their peers and to work on a range of integrated projects.

Who this programme is designed for
The project is mainly designed for teenagers between the ages of thirteen and nineteen. However, if you are very keen to take part, the activities are also available for young people from eleven years old, and up to the age of twenty-five.

The activities are designed for young people who want to meet new people and to do something interesting and different with their free time in the evenings.

We include a range of activities specifically for young people with learning difficulties and others projects where young people of all abilities are able to work together. We hope that this is an inclusive programme that encourages all our young people to socialise and work together and to have fun.

This is an opportunity for young people to get together, form a band and to create their own music. You can rehearse in a fully equipped rehearsal space and receive help with song-writing techniques, sound improvement, PA training and performance skills. You will have access to a trained tutor and can also use the recording studio.

Drama
Improvisational drama for young people who want to explore issues and develop their skills.  The group meets each week and works with the tutor to develop new themes and ideas.

Drum Kit
An opportunity to learn how to play drum kit. Lessons are usually for half an hour during the evening and are either one-to-one or in pairs. There is also the opportunity to gain recognised awards if requested.

Keyboards
An opportunity to learn how to play keyboards. As with our drum kit sessions, lessons are usually on a one-to-one basis or in pairs and are for half an hour, with the opportunity to gain recongnised awards if requested.

Music Technology
(Important Note: Music technology is temporarily suspended - please call WAC admin on 020 7692 5888 for the latest information)
This is an exciting course teaching you the fundamentals of creating your own music track using state of the art equipment and software in our recording studio. With the support of your tutor, you will learn how to programme beats, write lyrics, work with samples and record audio. We also have a new vocals booth which means you can record vocals and mix them down onto CD.

Trampolining
The emphasis for these classes is on fun and enjoyment of the sport. At the same time, it also develops young people’s co-ordination, fitness and agility. Trampolining is an essential skill for those wishing to become circus performers or stunt artists.

There are regular opportunities to achieve recognised awards in trampolining whilst attending these sessions. More experienced members are also encouraged to take a professional coaching qualification so that they can go on to teach others.

Vocals
This class combines the skills of learning songs and writing your own lyrics. During these sessions, you will explore finding your own voice and develop an understanding of how it works, its uniqueness and how to get the best out of it. You will have the opportunity to look at songwriting and musicianship and will also be building a repertoire of material that you can go out and perform.

WonderWAC
WonderWAC offers performing arts and media courses for young people with learning difficulties. The sessions provide the opportunity for members to develop their skills in various arts and media forms. They work creatively, build confidence and raise self-esteem.

Young people at WonderWAC have the opportunity to explore social education issues and develop independent living skills. Although development of skills and process are given top priority, young people are also encouraged to perform live and to record their work.

We have a state of the art Sensory Room, in-house. This gives our members access to a range of specialist sensory equipment and software that they can use to enhance their ability to communicate and develop creative ideas.

Your tutors
Your tutors for WAC Nites are all specialists in their field. Many of our tutors also teach on other courses or projects run by WAC and have a wide range of experience to offer. All are fully trained and all enjoy working with young people to help you get the most from your time with them.
